Hussain, Shujaat, Chaudhry (1945-) Statesman. Son of the well-known political figure Chaudhry Zahur Ilahi (assassinated in 1981), Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain graduated from the Forman Christian College, Lahore, and pursued post-graduate studies at Government College, Lahore. Thereafter, he went to Britain and obtained a Diploma in Industrial Management from Watford College of Technology, London.
In 1977, he took charge of his family business and initiated his political career. He was a candidate for election to the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab in 1977 but, since his party, the Pakistan National Alliance (PNA), decided to boycott the elections, he withdrew. Chaudry Shujaat served in Ziaul Haq's nominated Majlis-e-Shoora in 1982. He was elected as member of the National Assembly from Gujrat in the 1985, 1990, 1997 and 2002 general elections. In 1993, he was elected as a Senator.
From January to December 1986, he served as Minister of Information and Broadcasting; from June
1986 he served (at first concurrently with above) as Minister for Industries until December 1988. He again held the Industries portfolio from August to November 1990.
Chaudry Shujaat Hussain was elected President of the *Pakistan Muslim League, Quaid-e-Azarn Group (Q) on 16 November 2002. Following the resignation of Mir Zafarullah Jamali, Chaudry Shujaat Hussain was sworn in as the nineteenth Prime Minister of Pakistan on 30 June 2004. As per prior arrangement, he surrendered the office of Prime Minister three months later to Mr Shaukat Aziz.
