A group of the Punjabi Muslim trading community, called Chinioti Sheikhs, or Chinioti . They take their name from the town of Chiniot on the *Chenab River. At the time Chinioti Sheikhs owned 190 companies with basic assets in excess of three billion rupees. The 1970s nationalisation did not affect them much and their business activity has grown dramatically since then. Together with certain other *Punjabi business groups, in particular 'Ittefaq Brothers', whose representative, Mian Nawaz *Sharif, was twice the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the Chinioti Sheikhs have a major stake in the private business sector, occupying key positions in the Karachi business world.
