Dandia has gained popularity as a special dance in celebration of a wedding particularly in Karachi. It originates from the Gujarati speaking Hindu and Muslim communities of India from where dances such as Raas, Garba, etc. have also originated. The dandiyaas or two short sticks are held in each hand of all the dancers. Ideally, two circles, one formed by men and one by women move in clockwise and anticlockwise directions. Romantic songs are sung on the occasion. Raas is very energetic, colourful and playful, providing opportunity for acting and exchanging messages through eye contact. Many romances are said to bloom during these performances and these dances are particularly popular among the younger generation.
