The town is the administrative centre of a division of the same name. It was founded in the fifteenth century by Mir Ghazi Khan, the *Sardar of the *Balochi tribe of Rind. It was originally in Balochistan but boundary changes made by the British, for administrative and strategic reasons, tranferred it into the *Punjab. Following the flood of 1910-11, when the banks of the *Indus were breached with disastrous results, the present-day town was rebuilt, 9 kms. further upstream, on more organized lines. The town is a trading and industrial centre. It is also known for rope-weaving handicrafts of lacquer, wood and leather. It also produces date palm baskets, lind textiles. The town is a well-known Muslim religious centre.
