This is the name of the trans-*Indus plain between the the *Sulaiman Montains to the west and the Indu to the east, in the territories of the *Punjab and * orth West Frontier Province. It has an area of some 40,000 square km , three quarters of which is unproductive waste land. It consists of an elevated treeless area called Daman, a barren plain with clay soils unsuitable for farming. This barren region is criss-crossed by streams flowing off the mountains. On its eastern side, near the Indus, there is swampland. The area is, for all practical purposes, cut off from the more developed and densely populated east bank of the Indus. The population practices dry-farming (wheat, millet), but the area under cultivation is not large. Nomadic cattle-breeding is poorly developed.
