Husain, Mahmood, Dr. (1907-75) Scholar/Statesman. He was a historian, an educationist, a public figure and a state official of Pakistan. His brother, Zakir Husain, became President of India. Mahmood Husain studied at the universities of Aligarh and Delhi, and received his Doctorate from Heidelberg University (Germany) in 1932. He taught modern history and the history of international relations at the University of Dhaka (1933-48) and was elected to the first *Constituent Assembly (1946). He held several government positions: Deputy Minister for Defence and for the States and Frontier Regions of Pakistan (1949); Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Commonwealth Relations, for Finance and for Economic Affairs and also for Kashmir (1950-53). He was Dean of the FacuIty of History (1953-74) and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Karachi (1974-75). He launched and edited the multivolume History of the Freedom Movement (Karachi, 1957-70).
