(Arabic: 'the place where the Imam is', the title and obligations of the Imam') The supreme authority and leadership in a Muslim community or Muslim state. Among *Sunni Muslims, the Imamat is ideally implemented by an elected individual who has both secular and religious authority. Among *Shia Muslims, the Imamat is a divine institution handed down from generation to generation to the descendants of Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), husband of his daughter Fatima.
