The word masala is just the name given to a combination of spices. Biriani, however actually describes the dish itself. ( A rice dish often containing meat, poultry, seafood or vegetables )

"Masala" is the generic term for "spice". There are many different kinds, like chaat masala, garam masala, pav bhaji masala, etc. Think of it as types of seasonings. Often, things like pav bhaji masala are a mix of different seasonings that are used in making Indian dishes like pav bhaji. Biryani is a type of rice dish that's very popular in India, as well as Pakistan and the middle east. (It's actually a muslim dish.) It's really popular in Hyderabad especially. It's often made with meat, like chicken biryani or mutton biryani, but can also be made with vegetables as well. It contains a variety of spices, condiments, and often contains or is served with yogurt.
