This plateau stretches for 2,500 km. Its territory is 2,700 sq.km., about 70 per cent of which lies beyond the Iranian border. Some border regions reach between Iraq and southern Turhrnenia. The eastern region lies in Pakistan, where parts of it are called the *Zhob Plateau. The highest peak is at 5,604 metres called the volcano Demavend in the Elburz Mountains of Iran. The inner plateaus are approximately 500 to 2,000 metres above sea level and are fringed with mountains such as the Elburz, Kopetdag, *Hindu Kush, *Sulaiman Mountains, *Makran, and Zagros. There are many depressions with no outlet into the sea, semi-deserts and deserts, and salt lakes and freshwater lakes that dry up in summer. The rivers carry an insignificant amount of water.
