Hasan, Mahmud-ul, Maulana, Shaykh aI-Hind (1850-1920)
Political Activist. A graduate from the *Dar ul-Ulum in *Deoband, Mahmud-ul Hasan served as its principal from 1888 to 1920. He was the founder of the Muslim organization Jamiat al-Ansar in 1909 and helped establish several theological schools in the northwestern region of present-day Pakistan. The maulana established contact with the leaders of the Young Turks; in 1915 he met Enver Pasha in Hijaz. He was the leader of the '*Silk Letter Conspiracy' and was arrested in Malta in 1917. The maulana was also one of the leaders of the *Khilafat Movement. In 1920, he became the first President of lamia Millia Islamia.
