Beg, Farrukh
Artist. Farrukh Beg was a painter of the *Mughal *miniature school of the 16th century. He moved from Shiraz to Kabul, where he lived in 1576-85, then to India, to the courts of Akbar and Jahangir (c. 1601-8), and later to Bijapur, Deccan. His works in the style of Iranian miniatures are remarkable for their picturesque colour scheme, subtle and elegant presentation of colours and careful attention to detail. He painted many portraits, in which he achieved masterful likenesses, a high degree of realism and psychological depth.
The main works signed by him and ascribed to him are: A Portrait of Sultan Ibrahim Adil Shah of Bijapur with a Musical Instrument (c. 1610-11; the Naprstek Museum, Prague); miniatures in the manuscripts of Jami-atTawarikh by Rashidaddin (1595, the Shah's library, Tehran); The Poet in the Garden (Fine Arts Museum, Boston, USA); and Saints Against a Landscape Background (State Hermitage, St. Petersburg).
