Hashim, Abul (1905-74)
Political Activist. Abul Hashim was born in Burdwan and educated at Calcutta University. He was member of the Bengal Legislative Assembly and member AIML (* All-India Muslim League) since 1937. Abul Hashim became President of the Burdwan Muslim League in 1942; the same year he became Secretary of the Bengal Muslim League, and remained so until independence in 1947. His political creed included a form of Islamic Socialism. When his president (of the Bengal Muslim League and Chief Minister) Husein Shaheed *Suhrawardy moved an amendment to the Lahore Resolution at the AIML Delhi Convention 1946, changing the word from states to state, Abul Hashim lodged a strong protest with * Jinnah, stressing his support for two Muslim majority states. Later, he supported the move for a united and independent Bengal.
