Aziz, Shaukat (1949-)
Prime Minister of Pakistan since 2004. Shaukat Aziz, the twenty-first prime minister of Pakistan, is a former private banker credited with recent reforms of the country's economy. Born in Karachi on 6 March 1949, he received his early education at Saint Patrick's School, Karachi and Abbottabad Public School. He was awarded the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in 1969 at the Institute of Business Administration (lBA). He joined Citibank, Karachi in 1969 and served overseas in 1975, holding positions in Philippines, Jordan, Greece, USA, UK, Malaysia, Singapore and Saudi Arabia. He has been a member of the Board of several Citibank owned bodies, including Saudi American Bank and Citi I lamic Bank, as well as several non-profit organisations.
He was appointed Executive Vice President of Citibank in 1992 and till he joined the Government of Pakistan as Finance Minister in 1999, had 30 years of experience in global finance and international banking. When former Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali resigned in June 2004, the ruling party swiftly declared that Aziz would take over. He first had to secure a seat in parliament - a requirement to take up the top post-and did so in August 2004 with victory in two by-elections. Mr Aziz replaced *Pakistan Muslim League leader, Chaudhry Shujaat *Hussain, who had been in temporary charge.
Under his tenure as minister of finance the economy reportedly displayed growth of 6.4% a year. Observers attribute this success largely to debt reduction and the securing of hundreds of millions of dollars in loans and aid in return for support in the US-led war on terror.
On 30 July 2004 a suicide bomber attempted to assa sinate Aziz. It was while campaigning for the by-elections that this event occurred in the *Punjab province. Aziz enjoys golf, music and art. He is married with three children.
