Bekas (1858-82)
Poet. Bekas (real name, Abdul Qadir) was a Sindhi poet also writing in Persian. He was a follower of Sachal *Sarmast and the son of *Bedil Rohri. He was educated by his father, who emphasised *Sufi traditions.
His poems in the genre of *kaji, singing the love of God, enjoyed great popularity among the common people. The *diwans of Bekas and his father Bedil were collected and published by Gidumal Harjani, who also wrote a fundamental study of their work that marked a turning point in the styles of Persian and Sindhi poetry.
