Bulleh Shah (1680-1758)
Poet. He was a poet writing in *Punjabi. He was educated at an Islamic school in Lahore and represents the late Sufi poetry. He used various poetic forms in his work, including *kafi, barahmasah and *doha, and brought his poetic language closer to the spoken language. He believed in monotheism and opposed pilgrimages to Mecca. His teaching on religious equality reflected indirectly the eternal dream of social equality. In his religious and philosophic views, he was influenced by the philosophy of Vedanta. His work is well known in Arab countries and Iran.
