Hasan, Shahida (1953-)
Poet. Shahida Hasan's Urdu poetry has strong lyrical overtones but basically she is a poet with a vision and an undefined ideal. The operative sense of her poetry is visual. Her poetry is fresh but not juvenile. Her short poems drew inspiration from a happy childhood. It is only later that bitter political allusions crept into her poems; otherwise her themes have been more cosmic and her concerns more widespread. Shahida Hasan is an outstanding literary critic as well. She has visited the United States and China and has been the guest of the Virginia Centre for the Creative Artist. She was awarded the 1993 Fani Prize for Urdu Poetry at the World Urdu Conference, New Delhi. She has published one volume of poetry, Ek Tara hai Sirhane Mere (' A Star On My Bedstead', Lahore, 1995).
