Ahmad, Aziz (1913-78)
Writer. Aziz Ahmad was born in Barabanki, India, and was educated in Hyderabad (India) at the Osmania University. After teaching there, he joined the Information Ministry of Pakistan. In 1957 he joined the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London as a teacher. In 1962 he moved to the University of Toronto, Canada eventually retiring from there as Professor of Islamic Studies.
Aziz Ahmad was an outstanding literary critic in *Urdu with landmark publications on *Iqbal and Progressive Literature. He was one of the more successful novelists in Urdu, but even established a name through his English language contributions to South Asian studies, specially in the religious, social, and cultural spheres.
